Letter from Community, net founder, David Talley:To All Our Customers: We wish to inform you of changes occurring at Digital America which effect the Internet services you receive from us. As of Monday, December 24, 2001, we will no longer offer ISP services. Instead, we have arranged for your Internet service to be provided by Sonic.net, of Santa Rosa. This will occur without any interruption of service, and without any changes to your dial-up settings, e-mail addresses, etc. (we think they're trying to show off) ... Thank you for your support throughout the years. It has been a pleasure and a privilege serving you. And now, on to Sonic.net!!

Letter from Sonic.net co-founder, Dane Jasper:Community.net members, I'd like to welcome you to Sonic.net. My name is Dane Jasper, and I am the co-founder of Sonic.net. Digital America and Community.net are ceasing operations, and we've been asked to begin serving your Internet access. We appreciate the opportunity, and are excited about serving you. We appreciate David Talley's selection of Sonic.net to serve you, and we thank him for his support. Sonic.net was founded in 1994, and remains independent, stable and growing. I think that you will find many new features and benefits in the service here, and we look forward to getting to know you and hearing what your Internet service needs are, now and in the future. First, I'd like to assure you that your Community.net email address will be unchanged. In addition, we've worked to minimize the impact of any changes that would be required as part of this migration. To that end, all dialup, password, email and other settings can be left as they are by most customers In fact, if you are reading this message, you are on Sonic.net! Sonic.net currently serves over 25,000 end-user customers, mostly in California. There are 45 of us working here, and we offer telephone and email support seven days a week. Please note that we will be closed Christmas eve and Christmas day. We offer DSL, dialup, ISDN and dedicated access services, and I think that you'll be very pleased with the additional features that you may now take advantage of. Some of the features now available to you include Usenet news services and Unix shell access. For a full list of features included with your account, see: Account Information Please visit our website at www.sonic.net to learn more about us. For a good overview, see the "About Us" section at on the left at www.sonic.net/about.shtml There are press excerpts including an article from the New York times, a company history and other good background information. Please also review our acceptable use and support policy, which all Sonic.net customers are bound to, in this section. Our goal in this transition has been to minimize any confusion or impact for customers, and we'd like to answer any questions you have about the change. Please feel free to reply to this email or call our support group at 707-547-3400 if you have any questions. Note also that we do offer toll-free technical support in Northern California. To look up a support number for your area, please check your Pacific Bell telephone book (listed in the business white pages under "Sonic.net"), or you can use our local number lookup tools, also linked from our home page under "Find Dialups". If you would like to, you may begin using Sonic.net settings for your dialup and Internet configuration. No changes are required at this point, but if you would like transition to our settings, they're available in the support section of our website. I'd also like to invite you to participate in our local community discussion groups. Following is a list of group names and links:
A few details: Sonic.net's pricing for basic Internet service is $18.95, and we have arranged with Digital America to serve you until your pre-paid due date with them at no cost to you. After your account is due, you will be billed at Sonic.net's current price. Customers with credit cards on file will be billed monthly, and other customers will receive an email invoice for quarterly service. Billing periods and other options can all be changed, so let us know by writing to billing@sonic.net if you have any questions or concerns about billing. Customer email for the past week is currently being moved to our servers here. You may notice some duplicate messages which you have already seen if you are currently leaving mail on the server. If you have any archived older email which you've left on the old server, you can temporarily access it via POP by setting the POP server to the address 64.174.95.116. Note that this server will be going offline shortly, as Digital America is ceasing operations. Customer websites at www.community.net/~username have been migrated to Sonic.net's servers, and are currently active. Most pages should be live and functional without any changes required, but if you have any CGI applications or other special code in your web pages, they may not be fully functional. Please check your web page now to assure that it is working as you expect, and if you have any questions, please read and post to our discussion group at news://news.sonic.net/sonic.help.www Customers who have their own domain names are asked to migrate those domains to Sonic.net using our domain registration tool at: Domain Management Tool To transfer your domain, you will need to login with your username and password. As your website is currently on servers owned by Digital America, and they are ceasing operations, you should use our tools and move your domain here as soon as possible. You will not be charged for DNS or multihome/virtual server services between now and your account due date, but you will need to renew your actual domain registration for one year at a cost of $15. Multihomed virtual server (www.example.com) hosting pricing is $19 per month, beginning after your current due date. If you have any questions about domain hosting, please contact support@sonic.net or post to news://news.sonic.net/sonic.help.www for assistance as soon as possible. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns about this transition, and welcome to Sonic.net! -- Dane Jasper |
